If you are still a little bit confused about what newsgroups are, and where it all comes from, there is in fact an FAQ on Usenet itself. Usenet is the part of the Internet that has all the newsgroups, as opposed to the World Wide Web which is the part that has the web pages. People used to access Usenet by using Unix, which was a text based operating system that allows you to do a lot of things quickly, but requires a fair bit of learning because nothing is "point and click" like Windows and Mac.

While some people still access Usenet through Unix (I did at uni, and because it is so fast to use I still maintain that it is the best way to read Usenet), and use various Unix newsreaders, most "ordinary" people use Windows or Macintosh software. Because Usenet is still run behind the scenes with Unix, or similar types of operating systems, it is generally considered bad form to post in .html format or to post pictures to newsgroups not specifically intended for the purpose of receiving pictures.

To learn more about Usenet itself, including etiquette, history, why it is set up the way it is, the Usenet FAQ is to be found at: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/faq/part1/

The same site maintains a catalogue of FAQs for other newsgroups: http://www.faqs.org/
